چکیده
Background: Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by an enduring predisposition to generate epileptic seizures. Seizures are transient occurrence of signs and/or symptoms due abnormal excessive and synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Electroencephalogram (EEG), non-invasive instrumental test, has important role diagnosis epilepsy, as well monitoring results long-term treatment because it can detect interictal ictal discharges that crucial for confirmation classification Antiepileptic drugs first option patients with although effectiveness such limited only symptom control requires regular intaking patient. These exploit cell membrane channels, modifying their permeability, allowing either increase inhibitory neurotransmission or reduction excitatory one, hyperpolarizing neurons avoiding recurrence seizures without reversing stopping underlying mechanism epileptogenesis. Materials Methods: The internship took place Neurophysiopathology department Antonio, Biagio Cesare Arrigo’s hospital Alessandria, from October 2022 March 2023. During this period, was possible attend emergency prolonged recurrent during EEGrafic recording consequential amendments induced administration antiepileptic drugs. Follow up EEG also performed investigate modifications after period patient who been analyzed paper, underwent recordings obtained using bridge electrodes placed on scalp according international 10-20 system. Objectives: aim study analyze mechanisms action main drugs, relation physiological cellular regulating excitability effect epileptiform recordings.

Interictal Epileptiform Discharges
EEG remains the primary technique in the diagnosis, characterization, and localization of partial seizures. This review examines the significance and character of interictal epileptiform abnormailites, periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges, and ictal patterns in patients with partial epilepsy. Interictal epileptiform discharges are common and assist in the diagnosis and localization of p...
متن کاملDetection of Interictal Epileptiform Discharges in Eeg
The diagnosis of epilepsy heavily depends on the detection of epileptiform discharges in interictal EEG, the EEG in between two seizures. By visual analysis a physician wants to detect these epileptiform discharges (spikes). Due to the wide variety of morphologies of epileptiform discharges, and their similarity to waves that are part of normal EEG or to artifacts, this detection is far from st...
متن کاملThe BOLD response to interictal epileptiform discharges.
We studied single-event and average BOLD responses to EEG interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs) in four patients with focal epilepsy, using continuous EEG-fMRI during 80-min sessions. The detection of activated areas was performed by comparing the BOLD signal at each voxel to a model of the expected signal. Since little is known about the BOLD response to IEDs, we modeled it with the response ...
متن کاملESI and fMRI of interictal and ictal epileptic discharges
A major challenge in planning and performing resective surgery in drug-resistant epilepsy is the accurate identification of the epileptogenic zone. Currently, intracranial EEG is considered to be the most reliable preresective functional localisation method. Our objective is to non-invasively localise the epileptogenic zone using simultaneous high-density EEG source imaging (ESI) and fMRI of in...
متن کاملInterictal epileptiform discharges and phasic phenomena of REM sleep.
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of phasic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep events on interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). Twelve patients with focal epilepsy and IEDs during REM sleep were examined by video-EEG monitoring. The number of IEDs was calculated in different REM sleep episodes according to the rate of rapid eye movements. A negative correlation was identified...
